Wix, the Israel-based DIY website company, last year announced an SEO competition with a $50,000 prize to anyone who can beat them at their own SEO game by ranking for the keyword “SEO Hero”. To make the stakes high, Wix has put a big sum as the prize money for anyone who beats the DIY website builder service provider in the competition. To get an idea about how the company is taking the contest seriously, you need to know that it has created many websites specifically for the competition. With an open invitation for everyone, from professional web designers to newbie bloggers, Wix cannot afford to lose the game and let anyone else take a stab at winning the prize.
UPDATE: Wix seems to have done badly at its own game! The top rankers of the contest seem to be independent of Wix. The company will need something else to reclaim trust and confidence in its website builder platform. (–17 March 2017)
Wix SEO Hero: Inside Scoop
In response to an emailed questionnaire, Wix team/spokesperson responded to SpeckyGeek.com’s queries regarding the SEO competition. Here’s the inside scoop on the Wix SEO Hero contest.
Q: What is the Wix SEO Hero competition all about?
Wix: This competition is about shining a light on SEO. We issued a challenge to the SEO community (and beyond) to showcase their talent in a competition for SEO glory. To add to the charm of the contest, the winner will take home $50,000.
Editor’s Note: To win the competition, you had to create a new website, and in four months’ time rank in the first position for the search term “SEO Hero.” The challenge presents the opportunity to show off your SEO prowess, and win not just the grand prize, but also the esteemed title of SEO Hero. The domain entered into the competition must be a new domain purchased on or after November 16, 2016. Use an expired domain for the competition is not allowed. The domain cannot have a domain history prior to its current purchase date.
Q: How will the sites be ranked and what’s the prize?
Wix: Eran Hurvitz, CEO Of MRKT360 INC, will be judging the competition, and he’ll also be checking to make sure the competitors don’t use unethical SEO practices to get to the top.
The grand prize is $50,000. Any eligible contestant who ranks first among all valid competing sites for the phrase ‘SEO Hero’ will win the grand prize. And if Wix wins, we’ll donate half the money to a charity, while the other half will be split between the second, third and fourth place winners.
Q: What does it mean to be an SEO hero?
Wix: To us, an SEO hero is someone who really pours their heart and soul into optimizing their site. They employ only white-hat techniques, meaning those that are consistent with the guidelines and recommendations provided by search engines. This isn’t as easy as it sounds — all professional SEOs know how hard the work is, and usually they are the people who work silently behind the scenes to help their company or client get noticed. Their hard work and dedication leads to gains in search results and an increase in online presence. We decided it was time to show our appreciation and give these unsung heroes of SEO a bit of time in the spotlight.
Q: Why is Wix running this competition?
Wix: There’s been a rumor floating around for some time that Wix sites have issues with SEO, and it’s simply not true — the fact is that any website can do well in terms of SEO if the proper techniques and strategies are implemented. We at Wix wanted to find a fun and exciting way to prove our point, so in November of last year we launched a global competition challenging the SEO community to a battle on Google SERPs.
The fact is that Wix offers our users amazing SEO capabilities, and we make sure that Wix sites are built in accordance with the guidelines and recommendations provided by search engines. As with everything Wix offers, we try to make it easier for our users to work the optimization process.
With all of that in mind, we figured we would show off the SEO capabilities of Wix sites, let’s prove our critics wrong once and for all, and let’s make a great, fun competition while we’re doing it.
Q: Can a Wix site actually win?
Wix: You bet! Interestingly enough, some of the top contenders are Wix sites. We’ve made a ton of improvements to Wix’s SEO platform, and a lot of people are now reaping those benefits.
We’ve also created our own entry in order to honor our very own SEO Hero, Rand Fishkin! Our site also shares some useful tips and informative articles to spread our SEO knowledge. (Note: You can check one of the Wix entries to the SEO Hero contest here.)
Q: Why the superhero theme for the Wix SEO Hero contest?
Wix: SEO can seem a bit boring sometimes. But we still feel that SEOs are truly heroes – this theme is our way to inject the topic with some fun.
Q: How many people entered the competition?
Wix: A few thousand sites entered the competition, and many of them are very impressive. We’ve also seen a lot of great press about the competition, and some major influencers, including Barry Schwartz and Matt Cutts, have spoken about it. The feedback has been great.
