The Web can be a dangerous place. Anyone can pretend and assume a different persona from his real self. Scam artists, too, are trolling the Internet.
As a blogger helping people out and also interacting with other fellow online marketers, I keep receiving emails from people based across the world.
A large portion of my email conversations are with people using fake names and identities to hide their real location and objective. Most of the pretenders are SEO executives looking to get some free mentions on the website.
Faking to be someone is not uncommon on the Internet. It’s not just limited to email conversations or online websites and SEO executives. Pretenders are lurking on the Internet, on classifieds websites, on dating apps, on Facebook, Instagram and other social media platforms, and just about everywhere.
Pretty much every other person uses a dating app or dating website. Most of us have tried to be someone for random fun (or with serious intent). When we interact with people online, how safe is it? We are always at the risk of being taken for a ride. The risks associated with fake online profiles and identities is widespread.
Let’s take the example of dating.
In the United States, there are over 50 million people using dating apps or websites. With easy access to such online platforms, dating has never been as easy as it is now. Every person with some decent profile has a chance of finding a potential match and meet in real world. In 2017-18, finding your true love or a fling is just a few swipes away. But it also has its risks. However, you are only interacting with a pretty profile picture and a person with good skills at chat conversations. You don’t have the real person before you to assess.
How can people protect themselves with so much exposure online? How can people find out more details about people they interact with online, whether on dating apps, classifieds websites or other places?
Search Before You Commit
Even when dealing with email conversations, I generally search online about the person. Google, Facebook, Twitter, Treucaller (for phone number) are some of the easy and free options for a quick scan. Simply searching for a phone number or email of the person you are dealing with can offer you some insight into the real person you are dealing with.
If you live in a developed country such as the US, you can run a better background check for a person. Apart from free online search options, there are websites that offer better and more in-depth insight into the real person behind an email address, phone number or a social profile. If you are looking for someone who is based in the US, you have better access to verify and cross-check the credentials of the person.
One such website is GoLookUp.com, an online information website that provides background checks and people lookup searches. If you are dating in the US, you can verify the details of the person you plan to date by simply entering a first and last name, and the state they live in. GoLookUp will return information related to your search. If there’s danger lurking, you can protect yourself before meeting the person or going on a date.
Not Just for Dating Scan
You don’t need a background check just when dating. You need it all the time when you have to meet someone in person, or engage in financial transactions.
You can use online tools like GoLookUp for performing a background check and finding out information about your business associate, employee, neighbour, co-worker, or anyone you seek information about. The tool can be used for finding criminal records, phone number records, marriage and divorce records, traffic citations, court records, email search, and much more.
That’s not all. Using the web safety tool, you can also search for unclaimed money, unclaimed assets, address information, companies information, social search and related people information.
