Editor’s Note: Interested in knowing about the first-hand experience of a student who required to generate an income to support himself? Here’s the story of Jason, who worked as a student to support himself.
As a former student that attended an Ivy League University, it was difficult for me to time manage classes. I also worked a 40+ hour a week job which wasn’t the pathway I wanted, and I was becoming sleep deprived. As I expanded deeper with my goals and career trajectory, the more I understood my fit within society with the resources that I had available at that time. I could not continue my commitment to a regular 9-5 because the essentials of flexibility were plainly missing from the “modern” employer. Below are a few ways to make money online.
Just few years ago, tutoring and freelancing were two different realms. In today’s world, a person with a strong and passionate educational background can mix these two realms and potentially find a goldmine. A few months back, I stumbled across Studypool and found that goldmine. The platform allows all tutors to choose the work they want, when they want and with who. Throughout my era, I specifically focused on Algebra and Chemistry related work because of my engineering background and passion for physics. All payments are finalized through Paypal which allows all money is almost immediate after 2-3 business days of a slight delay. Studypool isn’t the only option (WizIQ is another favorite) but it’s simple and straightforward: tutors help students with their academic questions, and get paid.
Students may earn good money by sharing their knowledge as tutor mentors on Learnok.com and other similar online services.
Surveys & More
Searching online for ways to make money or increase income can be stressful. The information published may be sugar coated and surfaced as get rich quick schemes. You’ll also come across surveys as a mean for extra cash. In the past, I have participated in online surveys and made a decent amount overtime, however, don’t expect lottery money.
If providing feedback and opinions is your cup of tea, visit Swagbucks or MySurvey – make sure you dedicate enough time to make triple digits in days.
Another great and adventurous option is becoming a Brand Ambassador. Many startups have Brand Ambassador opportunities which you can find online without necessarily going through an internship. If you’re charismatic, love people and places, and have a natural salesperson approach, then becoming a Brand Ambassador is for you.
I’ve worked for Victory Agency and Quality Brand Promotions. These companies allow you to register and represent giant companies like Sprite, Huawei and Polaroid (just to name a few) by either passing out flyers within downtown areas or event hosting.
Here’s a few farfetch, but yet fun and successful opportunities that I did during my college days.
Food Delivery Services
GrubHub and Tapingo are great options if you know your community roads well, and you love driving (or biking). Stack your orders well, and you will stack your cash well. The flexibility of either using a car or a bike courier democratizes the chances for everyone and anyone to participate in the delivery service area. This creates an exciting getaway by delivering fast food to campuses and dorm rooms. Both these Apps allow you to set up your own schedule, or get paid per delivery. If you’re currently attending college and have from free time during semesters, check them out – you’ll interesting people along the way!
Nanny & Babysitting Jobs
There’s tons of babysitting and nanny gigs in nearly every town – which also include elderly companion and even pet sitting! These jobs benefit from many different angles and not just adding a few more dollars into your pocket. If you love animals and love helping people, I’d suggest that give it a go. Right after high school, I signed up to Sittercity and landed a year’s worth of nanning which kept me independent from asking allowance on a monthly basis.
Don’t feel left out if you’re always running out of time, and start looking at the glass half full. There’s plenty of options here, regardless of what background you have – but don’t stop searching.
